A beautiful decor is not enough

Junho 4, 2024 Many of us have surely experienced the feeling of investing in new decoration pieces or even changing the color of a space without it seeming to have made much of a difference, as the sensation of not being able to fully relax in the living room or concentrate in the office persists. Here are some reasons why sometimes nothing seems to work. Read before making more unstrategic purchases: “Beautiful” decoration sometimes has an “ugly” side! Did you know that some of the objects you use to decorate and make your spaces cozier can actually be making you (and your family or team) sick? The truth is that when it comes to furniture, paints, wallpaper, or even small decorative objects, rarely do the packaging or the websites of the companies that produce and sell them provide all the information about the materials they are made of, how they were produced, and the impact they can have on our health. By learning some simple tricks (and with the help of a qualified professional), it is possible to make better choices that combine aesthetics and well-being! “Beautiful” decoration goes out of style, and it’s not always an ally of our goals and lifestyle A very common mistake is to buy trendy decoration pieces (which often do not meet the functional needs of the spaces or our personal taste). Ideally, before choosing the decor (or buying more), it is essential to look at the space and understand its potential and constraints. There are several questions that can help you: who will use this room? What will they use it for? And at what time of day? What are their preferences, tastes, and needs? Once these questions (and solutions) are thought out, then it is time to understand what already exists, what should stay, and what is actually missing to give a special touch to the space in question! Decoration is a good complement, not the foundation of a space No one ever started building the roof without the foundations finished! With space decoration, it’s exactly the same: it should be the last step in a process that needs to start well and ensure that functionality and health are also taken into account. It doesn’t help to have a desk lamp in your favorite color if you haven’t first thought about the ideal bulbs to make the lighting in your space enhance your concentration, make you look good on work video calls, and give you real desire to work in this division. It is essential to first think about creating the ideal conditions to make the most of each space, and then, yes, personalize them and make them more to our liking. 5 bedroom hacks to improve sleep quality and relaxation

Junho 4, 2024 Feeling at ease and enjoying some privacy and relaxation are probably our first aspirations when daydreaming about our ideal bedroom. Sadly, this vision is frequently far from our reality, which comes at a great cost! As the space where we spend the most hours daily, optimizing the bedroom for quality sleep and stress reduction after a relentless workday should be a major priority. Transforming this space into a vital asset for our health involves simple, inexpensive adjustments that can make a substantial difference at the end of each day — literally! Here are five recommendations that are easy to implement: 1. Get the right lightning Selecting the right lightning solution is one of the key decision in enhancing bedroom ambiance for improved health and well-being. In the bedroom, we should give preference to “yellowish” light — roughly between 2000–3000 K — as we mainly spend time there after the sun sets. This simple choice helps the natural release of melatonin, keeps our circadian rhythm working properly and boosts the chances of restful nights. Pro tip: Ready to finally sleep? Ensure the room is pitch black! Various studies seem to indicate that even faint sources of light — such as electronics or a poorly closed shutters — can put us at higher risk of depression, obesity, diabetes and other metabolic complications [1]. 2. Opt for calming colors and patterns When it comes to colors, it is best to go for those that we often associate with calmness and relaxation, like shades of green and blue, than remind us of a peaceful river or a quiet backyard garden. Choose lighter color patterns on wallpapers or other home textiles, favoring smaller or less contrasting compositions. Pro tip: Symmetric patterns are a clever choice! Our brains evolved to perceive complex symmetry, like we often witness in nature, as the epitome of beauty, which sooths our nervous system and evokes a sense of peace [2]! 3. Prefer natural materials Wood, ceramics and even wicker or rattan baskets can be simple ways to bring some nature and its harmonious qualities indoors. Research shows that biophilic design principles, mimicking inside the natural environment, to which humans optimally adapted while evolving — seems to do wonders for our stress levels, by calming us quickly and effectively after a hectic day. 4. Invest in soft textures and rounded shapes Opting for some extra roundness, instead of very sharp angles appears to be a great choice for our bedrooms. Pointy shapes seem to trigger the amygdala, the brain’s region associated with processing fear and arousal [3]. Put simply, we tend to equate curves with lack of surrounding threats. This subconsciously indicates us that there is no cause of concern and that the ideal conditions for sleep are met. Adding soft pillows and blankets can be a cheap, yet effective way to ensure restful nights. 5. Minimize noise Noise seems to be often unavoidable in modern life, especially for those living in a city or densely populated areas. Apparently, even if we are able to sleep through it, exposure to noise during the night might still have negative health implications. It triggers brain activity, which dysregulates our stress hormones and over time can lead to problems such as insulin resistance and cardiovascular issues [4]. Pro tip: Avoid having your bedroom facing a road with heavy night traffic. In case this is not an option, consider investing in soundproof window frames or opt for a more budget-friendly solution by applying non-toxic caulking tape to windows and doors. The 9 foundations of a healthy buiding

Junho 4, 2024 In the contemporary world, we spend countless hours indoors. Knowing the impact the spaces spaces surrounding us have on our health and well-being, it is possible to transform our homes and offices into great allies by making more informed choices and adopting good daily habits. However, with so much information, it is not always easy to know where to start! Harvard T.H. School of Public Health addresses this issue with its 9 fundamental pillars for healthier buildings [1]: ventilation, air quality, temperature, humidity, dust & pests, safety & comfort, water quality, acoustics & noise, and lighting & views. These are excellent starting points for those who want to create healthier homes and offices: 1. Ventilation Renewing the air is essential to avoid strange odors and escape drowsiness. Spaces with better air circulation, where windows are frequently opened or where there are good air conditioning systems with adequate and periodically cleaned filters, promote the productivity of those who work in them. 2. Air Quality Not all household products are harmless! Certain ingredients in cleaning detergents or air fresheners may secretly pollute the indoor air: it’s important to choose wisely! For those suffering from respiratory or hormonal problems, this is a point not to be overlooked, and it can make all the difference in everyday life! 3. Temperature It’s not normal to wear a scarf indoors in winter! Nor is it good to sweat in the office all summer, even with fans and air conditioning on. Maintaining indoor temperature close to comfort values is essential for us to concentrate more easily on the tasks we are doing, have well-rested nights, and truly enjoy all indoor spaces. 4. Water Quality We are largely made up of water, so the quality of the one we ingest (but also use for showering or cleaning at home) has a major global impact on our overall health! Filtering it is often an excellent strategy, especially for those battling digestive and skin problems. 5. Humidity Mold is not just an aesthetic problem, it can worsen respiratory (and hormonal) diseases! Sometimes, humidity indoors seems like a lost battle, but with small tricks, it is possible to keep it within the right range in order to avoid, treat, and prevent the terrible dark stains on walls and ceilings. 6. Dust & Pests Keeping dust under control, using “clean” cleaning strategies – i.e., non-toxic cleaning products – is crucial to avoid asthma attacks and allergies. Nothing like avoiding bringing it from outside and cleaning periodically to prevent its accumulation. 7. Acoustics & Noise Does noise disturb your sleep? Noisy rooms increase stress and do not allow us to relax. If during the day, intense or repetitive sounds can drive us crazy, at night they can prevent us from entering deep (and restorative) sleep! 8. Lighting & Views A window overlooking a garden is not a whim! Nature, brought into spaces, promotes calm and focus, just as choosing the right lighting to each room promotes comfort and prevents sleepless nights. 9. Safety & Comfort An uncomfortable space affects our nervous system, keeping us anxious and unable to concentrate. Our desk position in the room and our ability or inability to see who passes by in the corridor makes a big difference in how comfortable or not we feel in a particular room! Natural light: Maximizing its potential indoors

Junho 4, 2024 Sunlight is always a crucial criterion when searching for a new flat to rent, preparing to buy a house or deciding which desk we would like to occupy in our recently refurbished office floor. We all want it, and with good reason! Those delightful sunbeams offer more than a glimmer of hope during the endless winter months, they are also quite responsible for cueing to our bodies when to keep performing a myriad of daily functions optimally. Confused? You have likely heard of the circadian rhythm. If not, think of it as our 24-hour internal clock, an embedded system that sets the time for a large range of processes within us. This biological clock evolved to synchronize with the sun and the moon: white, bluish morning light awakens and invigorates us for the day ahead, while the warm hues of sunset help wind us down, preparing for a good night of sleep just in a couple of hours. Sunlight, the free Holy Grail Research shows that, besides regulating our sleeping patterns [1], natural light enhances good mood and prevents depression long-term [2], by regulating our melatonin levels throughout the day. As our major source of vitamin D, it also contributes to a stronger immune system — bolstering our resistance to diseases — and to overall hormone balance [3]. The modern Human, an indoor species Knowing that keeping our internal time attuned depends greatly on sunlight and how much we are exposed to it, we should keep it as a priority! No, we don’t need to bask in the sun for hours daily, but considering we are spending so much of our time inside, we must find a way to craft simple strategies into our routines and spaces to get the most out of it. In addition to going for a walk first thing in the morning, doing a quick break outside midday, and even setting our artificial lightning to mimic what is happening outside — which is advise not to be dismissed — , there is still hope for those bound to an office desk for 8+ hours a day or stuck inside due to a plethora of other reasons. Get the benefits even while staying inside For those seeking to maximize their exposure to sunshine even inside, here are some strategic tips for your spaces you might give a try: • Arrange the divisions in your home and office according to when and how much you use them (in the northern hemisphere, you might want to place your kitchen or office facing east, to get more of that morning light! Reserve less light-dependent spaces for areas with limited exposure); • Open the curtains first thing in the morning (do not miss out on that white, bluish light that will wake you up and keep you focused the whole day!); • Position your office desk close to a big window whenever possible (do I need to say more?); • Place trees and other garden vegetation so it does not block sunlight indoors (prune early autumn so you also get some shadow when needed in hot, sunnier climates); • Give preference to spaces that have large windows, sunrooms and balconies, when buying or renting; • Use lighter colors and reflective surfaces inside (particularly important in rooms that are already darker or that do not get sun exposure at all).
